The Cool Mom Aesthetic: How To Master Modern Fashion At 50+

20

I am a self-proclaimed ‘cool mom’ regarding fashion choices. Am I wearing designer pieces that all the kids are wearing? Most certainly not, but, do I think I’ve mastered the ‘Rich Mom Energy’ on budget as Vogue has discussed, I believe so! Modern fashion is undoubtedly a mind field. Once upon a time you could wear a funky shirt and flared trousers and that would be the style of the decade. Now, there seems to be a new ‘trend’ monthly, and it can be hard for us old birds to keep up.

Thankfully, I have an insider scoop on mastering modern fashion, courtesy of my 23-year-old daughter who dresses people for a living! With this knowledge comes great power, fashion power that is. The best part about the modern wardrobe that I have mastered is that you can buy capsule pieces, and wear them for years to come! Right, let’s cut to the chase and let me share with you the secret sauce for achieving the modern fashion trends at 50+!

Ditch the frumpy pieces

First and foremost, if you want to look like you know what you are doing regarding fashion at 50+, you need to say goodbye to those frumpy pieces! I am talking about those ill-fitting tops and dresses that do nothing for your figure but hide it.

Yes ladies, we all reach a time where the extra skin seems to not be shifting, but who is to tell you that you can’t look amazing in clothing that compliments your shape a lot better? Say goodbye to those ‘comfort dresses’ that help you forget what’s underneath. Is anyone else guilty of hoarding some of their maternity clothes? Before my daughter got her hands on my closet, you should have seen some of the old relics hiding in there. Make space for new, and donate the stuff still in good condition!

Perfect your jacket game

Let’s start with the essentials. My daughter told me there are only 4 jackets you need in your life for a classic wardrobe. A structured black blazer, a long draping trench coat, a winter coat to fend off the cold and a leather jacket (if you feel daring enough). Having these four staple jackets will leave you with endless layering options throughout the year. What to style these pieces with without looking too ‘ try hard’ I hear you say. Here are some combinations you can try for each

  • Blazer – Blazers will never go out of fashion. For the on/off-duty look for running errands or trying to look fancy when exploring Jo Malone, I love to pair my blazer with a matching blouse, some straight-legged jeans, a nice belt and of course some ankle boots. Don’t forget a beaded statement necklace or even a patterned scarf to add some brightness to the look. It looks so classy, while also being so effortless.
  • Trench – The trench coat is a trend I was late to, but am so glad I jumped on board with it. Trench coats are another style that has risen back into popularity. Having one to hand for those days with a slight chill is great. I think the camel trench you can’t go wrong with, but my daughter has a khaki green one which I like to steal from time to time for variety. What are daughters for right?
  • Leather jacket – As soon as my leather jacket comes out, my husband knows I’m ready for a night out with the girls! Someone once told me that I am too old to be wearing a leather jacket, and to that I say jog on! I will always wear my trusty leather jacket. I have had mine for nearly 10 years, the secret is splashing out that little bit extra for good quality faux leather, and it will stay with you for styling in years to come. Going out with my girls leaves me feeling like I’m in my 20s again, so who is to say I can’t dress like it either? I usually opt for a little black dress, matching nights and knee-high boots for that extra flair.

The wider your trousers the better

It’s time to say goodbye to those skinny jeans and invest in a quality pair of wide-legged trousers. Wide-legged is in, and I don’t know about you, but my leg circulation is thanking me for it. Wide-legged trousers not only look elegant, but they are also great for perfecting your silhouette. Paired with a ribbed t-shirt, and perhaps a nice sweater draped onto the shoulders in case cold weather hits, you will look fabulous.

Final tips

Just to round things up, let me share some of my secret tips and tricks for finding the perfect ‘cool mom aesthetic’ pieces. If you are a cool mom, why not let your fashion reflect your nature?

  • Use Pinterest for inspiration – My daughter got me hooked on Pinterest, and now I spend hours scrolling for inspiration! It is much easier to visualise an outfit when you see it on another woman your age.
  • Add a pop of colour for each outfit – Even though the ‘neutral’ look is very in right now, it’s important to include pops of colour for each outfit. Whether it be pairing a blue button down with black wide-legged trousers, or using a silk scarf to tie around your neck or waist with a notable pattern.
  • Invest in capsule items – If you are anything like me, you probably have a pair of shoes or a bag that has stayed with you for years. It is a shame how expensive fashion has become, however, sometimes you need to splash out that extra amount for a timeless piece. Consider a staple pair of boots for example. I bought from Aldo a few years back and I have been pleasantly surprised by their durability!
